The benefits of being a mentee
By Peter Johnson MICDDS
“Being a part of the mentor scheme has dramatically improved my confidence. I believe the Mentor – Mentee relationship between Wayne Harrop and myself has been one of the key elements of my desire to succeed in BCM”
When I first started at Wakefield MDC, I was a very shy individual with limited experience and understanding of BCM. Once I had settled in to the working environment I was quickly brought up to speed with the BCM Programme. At first I found BCM extremely confusing, but also very interesting. I thought that it was important for me to go away and read on the subject so I could gain a better understanding.
Wayne suggested the Mentor Scheme and I thought that this would be a great opportunity for me to develop a level of professionalism and further my future career prospects. Being a part of the mentor scheme has dramatically improved my confidence. I now feel I am gaining the necessary knowledge to help me succeed in BCM. The Scheme has enabled me to evaluate where my strengths and weaknesses lie. I have now been able to find ways of how I can improve my weaker areas.
Throughout the process we have maintained the BCI Competency Assessment Form and the Mentoring Log Book. Recently I reflected on what we have done so far and I was amazed by the amount of work we had accomplished, the knowledge I have gathered and the confidence I have gained. I believe the mentor – mentee relationship between Wayne and myself has been one of the key elements of my desire to succeed in BCM. The mentor scheme has provided me with ideas of how I can continue to improve on my skills, competence and ability.
I would encourage any new comer to BCM, to use the Mentor Scheme as a valuable starting point as it is a logical step to gain knowledge and confidence in relation to BCM.
