Today’s world is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA), or as more recently coined in 2018 by James Cascio, brittle, anxious, nonlinear, and incomprehensible (BANI). In such a world, the accelerating rate of change results in an environment in which only agile organizations will survive. Creating the required degree of agility can only occur if the three critical elements of strategy, risk, and resilience are integrated to create a tight feedback loop to enable the organization not only to identify and respond to large disruptions but also to take advantage of opportunities timeously and under-take the continual recalibrations needed to adjust to incremental change. Only then will the organization be able to create, protect, and preserve value over the long term.

The webinar will cover:

  • Brief definition of strategy, risk, and resilience as well as the need for integration (largely due to the VUCA / BANI world we live in!)
  • The integrated framework of strategy, risk and resilience and key integration stages
  • The benefits of an integrated approach including good governance
  • Enablers to successful integration and barriers to integration

This session will also discuss the common elements to all three disciplines which are:

  • Commit and Mandate
  • Context and Enablement
  • Perform and Achieve
  • Monitor, Review, Record and Report

The presentation will include two short case studies that reflect great resilience;

  • Victorinox – build for resilience
  • A craft brewer – pivot during the pandemic

The webinar is based on the Institute of Risk Management South Africa’s 2022 release of a guideline on integrating strategy, risk and resilience, The Good Practice Guidelines, the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report February 2024 and ISO standards, specifically ISO22301 and ISO31000.
